.... and runs to Thebes. He goes from boy to king. Oedipus intended on avoiding letting the prophecy come true so he escaped from what he thought was his mother and father because he cared. In doing this he kills his father of birth, and then he frees the people of Thebes from the plague of the Sphinx and inherits the throne. It is no surprise Oedipus didn’t go insane. I guess to the result of this he gouged his eyes out. He did so many good things for his people and when it came time to find the killer of King Lais he did everything in his power to find them .....

.... especially since Teiresias foretold the ending of the story. If Oedipus had been more patient and waited, he might have not been quite so upset about the future, nor shaken up about what was to happen. However, that one trait did not alone take away his position of high authority. Oedipus displayed anger throughout the whole story, which did not help him at all. Another type of friendship is the one that came between John Oakhurst and young Tom Simson in the story of The Outcast of Poker Flat. In this camaraderie the two men were in a poker game and young Simson lost all of his money to Oakhurst.
