.... The book instills in one's mind what a battle fought during the Civil War was actu-ally like to be apart of for the soldiers. The setting for the book takes place in Pennsylvania, where the Battle of Gettys-burg is fought. The author provides many detailed maps of both army's positions. Throughout the book, the reader is shown the pain, difficulty, anguish, and other dilemmas the armies face leading up to the final confrontation. In the beginning of the book we learn about the North from a spy for the South. His job was to scout the North's position .....

The image of white flowers provides a feeling of cleanliness and purity, which corresponds to the way Hardy has chosen to initially depict Tess. .... Clare's actions and attitude toward Tess had less severe effects on her because his intentions were good unlike Alec d'Urbervilles. Angel and Alec have very different attitudes toward Tess. After he came from Brazil, Angel realized that "The beauty or ugliness of a character lay not only in its achievements, but in its aims and impulses; its true history lay, not among things done, but among things willed (421)." .... remorse is probably more for upsetting George than it is for actually killing the animal. Another way that death and loss is evidenced by this novel is when Lennie killed Curley’s wife. When Lennie is in the barn (after killing his new puppy) Curley’s wife came into the barn and came on to Lennie. Lennie not knowing what was happening let her lull him into touching her hair.
