The scaffold itself is another symbol Hawthorne uses. Like the prison, it also symbolizes sin and guilt. “The very ideal of ignominy was embodied and made manifest in this contrivance of wood and iron” (60). It provides the setting of several important scenes in the novel. It is where Hester is forced to stand for three hours as punishment, where Dimmesdale, Pearl, and H .....

.... in his past. John Proctor has been characterized Independent, only because of his Independent actions. In Act One, he independently went to Rev. Parris’ house to fetch his servant Mary Warren, he could have asked his wife or sons to accompany him but does not. Also in act one he attacked the Puntnam’s without any help, all on his own. Proctor seems to run his own life and run his family by himself. In act three when he goes on trial, he is accused of tending to his farm. But the fact is that he tends his farm by himself. He never asks his wif .....

.... people really thought about him or the way he was dressed, and remained very calm and relaxed, maybe even carefree, most of the time he was in court. This also gives Sydney Carton an immature appearance in the novel. At the beginning of the story and a large part of the novel, Sydney Carton is shown to be a very arrogant, frustrated man with a drinking problem. Several times in the novel he indulged in his drinking to the point of becoming drunk or close to it. Many times that he is seen, he is drinking wine or has a flask of liquor in his hand. Th .....

She was married to a bad man who left her after a short time to follow other women. Her love for him turned to hate, and she killed her unborn baby. This act gave her remorse for all her life since she considered it a murder. Tortured by this incident, she had a mental breakdown, for a period of time, when her second son -- with her second husband, St. Clair -- died at birth. .... fire from far off in the distance.Fire meant death. The Jews of long ago following Abraham's example in the bible, would build a fire to offer an animal sacrafice to God. Originally Abraham was to sacrafice his son Isaac by fire. But God stopped him. I'm sure that as Elie moved forward in the line that he thought that the Nazis were using fire for something God hadn't intended. He was also angry at God for allowing them to use fire in such a horrible way. God daved Isaac, why couldn't he save them? Although Wiesel doesn't make note of it, several other Holoc .....

They still don’t catch on until he drops the bomb that he’s already been to visit. He enjoys their shocked reaction, but doesn’t stick around.
