Natives attack them and the helmsman is killed before Marlow frightens the natives away with the steam whistle. They come to Kurtz's Inner Station, expecting to find him dead, but a Russian trader there assures them everything is .....

As Emil awakes he describes himself having fallen "out of paradise back into reality, again face to face with the enemy, with his evil eye." This dream is very sinificant in that it shows Emil's departure from the absolute "good" world into one of "evil." Emil has had first experience with lying, which he did to Kromer, that opened the door to more evil. Emil now finds himself jumping at every command Kromer throws to him. Emil begins to feel separated from his family and their peace and happin .....

This is shown in The Shop Around the Corner in a quote from Klara, who says to Kralik, "Why, I could show you letters that would open your eyes. No, I guess you probably wouldn't understand what's in them. They're written by a type of man so far superior to you it isn't even funny." The same basic statement is made by Kathleen to Joe in You've Got Mail, where she remarks, "The man who is coming here tonight is completely un .....

.... been analyzed, one can see that the relationship between Mother and Father is one that seems to be held together purely by sexual desire. The first reference to this is at the very beginning of the novel. Doctorow writes, "On Sunday afternoon, after dinner, Father and Mother went upstairs and closed the bedroom door"(p 4). Their marriage is happy as long as they continue to have a good physical relationship. Whereas in the beginning of the novel Mother and Father's relationship was good, by the end of the novel "He felt it had been stupid to leave his wife .....

.... it slaps him in the face. This book was written, not churned out or word-processed. Again, I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I never noticed it until it was brought up in class, maybe because it wasn't a point for me in In Our Time, but He doesn't often enough credit quotations with, ",he said," or, ",said Brett," or, ",Bill replied." In SAR it stood and called attention to itself. I wasn't particularly bothered by His not telling me who said what, but it was very...pointed. I first noticed around the hundredth page or so. Then I realized I couldn't keep track of .....

.... do not work towards their own happiness. They work only for what is taught to be the common happiness. True pleasures of life are not allowed. Since they do not see personal benefits and fulfillment from their work, they lack enthusiasm and personal initiative. It is as though everybody has been brainwashed to one collective way. The people consider themselves as one body. Though collectivisim may have certain benefits, in Anthem it is taken to a dangerous extreme. Their collective society has nearly wiped out any traces of the individual. For example though .....

Methought the billows spoke and told me of it; The winds did sing it to me; and the thunder, that deep and dreadful organ pipe, pronounced the name of Prosper; it did bass my trespass. Therefore my son i' th' ooze is bedded; and I'll seek him deeper than e'er plummet sounded and with him there lie mudded." He is telling us that Prospero is in control of him. Prospero, Trinculo, and Stephano are in control of Caliban, the deformed son of Sycorax, and therefore Caliban is their slave. "Monster lay-to your fingers; help to bear this .....

.... imagery praised his work. In Young Goodman Brown (1864), Brown a young Puritan, leaves Faith, his wife for a nighttime journey in the woods. Meeting an older man with a twistered staff, he learns that others have traveled the path before him. Sick at heart, he observes a witches' Sabbath and discovers the presence of his own wife. The next morning Goodman Brown returns to Salem a changed man, stern, sad and gloomy, he believes that all are cursed. It is difficult for the reader to determine if the events in this story actually took place of was it a dream .....
