The constant and crippling manipulation of the male, as he introduces oppression and hopelessness into the lives of his women, is equated with the twentieth century's worst period. Words such as Luftwaffe, panzerman, and Meinkampf look are used to descibe her father and husband as well as all male domination. The frequent use of the word black throughout the poem conveys a feeling of gloom and suffocation. Like many women in society, we know that Plath felt oppressed and stifled throughout her life .....

After the first section of the book, we finally are able to see where the story is headed and we are able to settle down and develop a true sense of who Duddy Kravitz is. At this point the author slows down the rate of which events come and allows the character development to happen more naturally. The book became much easier and more enjoyable due to this. The reader could begin to feel the connection with the main character by realizing the impact on Duddy through his ordeals. For example, .....

Huck’s idea of adventure is to escape from society, their beliefs and all of their conformities, but he does it in a way that is level-headed and sensible. Tom, on the other hand, is more likely to make up an adventure based on something he had read in a book and not really trying to escape anything. All of his ideas and schemes come from books, unlike Huck, who has actually lived the fantasies Tom has imagined. The two are alike in one way though. They both have a very strong sense of adventure.
