The conflict, which starts the plot of the story, is also present here: a scorpion has stung Coyotito, Kino’s son, and Kino need to find a pearl to pay .....

This is especially seen in St. John as Jane describes her cousin as being “as stiff about urging his point” as possible. They believe that want they do is in the best interest of Jane and use unfair methods to tempt Jane into going against her own morals. Rochester tries to convince Jane to run away with him by using the tragic story of his marriage to Bertha Mason. While Brett saunters around on her sexual escapades, she does not take into account the feelings of Jake, the man who truly loves her, because he is unable to meet her sexual needs. Brett does bother with Jake’s frustrations; she uses him only as an emotional support to fall back on when the flings leave her emotionally unsat .....

Even though she can no longer see to draw the designs for the rug, and has to have David trace them on for her. "David had marked them for her. Her eyes could no longer trace the outlines of scrolls and flowers"(9). Throughout the novel we are taken to Ellen constantly working on the rug. In the Prologue, Ellen is the artist and David is her apprentice. He does not realize that he too can be an artist, that there are other forms of art. He is looked at as an odd .....
