Sir Isaac Newton
, the culminating figure in the scientific revolution of the 17th century, was born on December 25, 1642 (according to the Julian calendar then in use: the date was January 4, 1643, according to the Gregorian calendar in use today), in the manor house of Woolsthorpe, near Grantham Lincolnshire, England.
Newton came from a family of modest yeoman farmers. His father died several months before he was born. Three years later his mother remarried and moved to a nearby village, leaving Isaac in the care of his maternal grandmother.
