The United States was the first nation to have had organized parties. The Democrat party goes back almost to the origins of the American nation.
In 1791, Jefferson and Madison went to New York to meet the anti-federalists grouped around governor George Clinton and the Tammany Club. Jefferson and Madison took advantage of the group's frustrations who saw all the functions conceded to their federalist opponents reunited around the Schuyler-Hamilton. The foundations of the jefferson republican party (future Democrat party) were set. The party's adherence to the centralizing approach made it become the dominant party.
