Organizations against alcohol such as the Anti-Saloon League and the
Woman's Christian Temperance Union were succeeding in enacting local
prohibition laws, turning the campaign into a national effort. In the late
1900s there was an average of one saloon for every 150 to 200 people,
including nondrinkers, due to competition in brewing companies. ....
