Gender Role Socialization
is the process whereby people learn and adopt the gender that their culture deems appropriate for them (Schwartz & Scott, p. 435). History has show that many cultures still adhere to traditional gender roles even as we come closer to the turn of the century. The United States is considered to be the melting pot of cultural diversity and in this country, women and men no longer accept traditional gender roles. Contemporary gender roles apply specifically to the term “melting pot” because this country is not just culturally diverse, it has become completely gender role contradictory.
