Comets
Number of words: 431 - Number of pages: 2.... a comet approaches the sun, the frozen gas becomes unfrozen which causes the dust particles to become free. Light pressure from the sun and some other forces cause these materials to move away from the head of the comet and in the opposite direction from the sun. According to Charles A. Schweighauser in his book, entitled Astronomy from A to Z: A Dictionary of Celestial Objects and Ideas, he states that we see comet heads and tails because they not only reflect sunlight, but they also fluoresce—give off their own light—when are near the sun. The tails from .....

Hantavirus
Number of words: 3046 - Number of pages: 12.... along with fatalities. Throughout the 1970s, eleven other strains of es were found in Korea and Eurasia. In 1976, Hantaan virus was isolated from the Apodemus agreavius coreae mouse. Using the microscope, one could see the round microbes that were stacked in rows along the epithelial lining of the lungs (CDC website 6). Each infection still involved mild kidney infections. The same type of rodent always carried the virus, and people came in contact with the microbes through skin exposure or inhalation of infected animal feces or urine. Research continu .....

The Big Bang
Number of words: 1282 - Number of pages: 5.... still expanding, as astronomers have observed.
The Steady State model says that the universe does not evolve or change in
time. There was no beginning in the past, nor will there be change in the
future. This model assumes the perfect cosmological principle. This principle
says that the universe is the same everywhere on the large scale, at all times.2
It maintains the same average density of matter forever.
There are observational evidences found that can prove the Big Bang model
is more reasonable than the Steady State model. First, the redshifts o .....

The Rain Forest - Example Of A Flourishing Ecosystem
Number of words: 2837 - Number of pages: 11.... sandy red coloured soil can be found
as well. This soil contains few nutrients, which is why attempting to grow
any sort of crops would be futile. On top of this soil is a thin layer of
humus, which simply said is the compost made from the millions of dead
animals and plants of the forest. When things such as leaves and animals
die their remains are quickly broken down by a limitless amount of tiny
organisms. Some insects that do just this sort of thing include: beetles,
ants, termites and a host of others. With all of this death happening so
quickly you would e .....

Hanta Pulmonary Syndrome
Number of words: 414 - Number of pages: 2.... incubation is somewhat longer, making the chances of contracting it somewhat higher. In places such as woodpiles and sheds where there is little air circulation to move off the virus, it can linger for a sizeable duration of time.
The best method of fighting the hanta virus is prevention. By controlling the rodent population and preventing them from entering houses and sheds, the risk of infection can be lowered. Furthermore, educating those in high-risk areas of the signs of the disease and what to do about them significantly lowers the likelihood of death.

Down Syndrome 4
Number of words: 1135 - Number of pages: 5.... the term was dropped from
scientific use. Instead, the condition became "Down's syndrome." In the
1970s, an American revision of scientific terms changed it simply to "Down
syndrome," while it still is called "Down's" in Europe.
In the first part of the twentieth century, there was much speculation of
the cause of Down syndrome. The first people to speculate that it might be
due to chromosomal abnormalities were Waardenberg and Bleyer in the
1930s. But it wasn't until 1959 that Jerome Lejeune and Patricia Jacobs,
working independently, first determin .....

Protein Synthesis
Number of words: 770 - Number of pages: 3.... order of all the amino acids. The amino acids are held together by strong peptide bonds. The next level of protein organization is the secondary structure. This is where the primary structure is repeated folded so that it takes up less space. There are two types of folding, the first of which is beta-pleated sheets, where the primary structure would resemble continuous spikes forming a horizontal strip. The second type of folding is an alpha helix, which goes vertically forming a wavy line. An alpha helix is in the same shape of one strand of DNA. These .....

Extinct Animals Research: Woolly Mammoth
Number of words: 414 - Number of pages: 2.... on a less frequent basis since the
Woolly Mammoth, much like today's camels, keeps under its sloping back a thick
layer of blubber as nutrition when food was not needed.
The problem in keeping a creature such as the Woolly Mammoth in a zoo-
like surrounding would be poachers. Due to the endangerment of such a
magnificent species, poachers of pelts and ivory would most certainly be after
it's huge tusks and thick furs, so it would be necessary to post guards around
it's cage at all times.
A large-scale habitat would be constructed for this creature since,
durin .....
